about khanom - from our point of view

the UPSIDE: the area of khanom has amazing beaches, a wonderful nature and very nice people. compared to samui or phuket it is extremely quiet - the bars, jet ski and tuk tuk mafia are still more or less absent and the foreigners who move here or make a holiday do it exactly for the mentioned reasons - they don't mind the lack of lotus and mc donalds.

the DOWNSIDE: the locals predict the BIG BOOM since many years and it never happens because there is no concept - so everybody simply tries to make as much money as possible from anything. there is no planning and no ecological consciousness at all, which leads to the fact that already three high-rise buildings spoil the beautiful khanom beach, the first jet skis are available for rent (which simply means the OUT for the sensitive pink dolphins) and even big hotels burn their highly toxic waste along the beach road instead of disposing it properly. unlike mentioned on other websites, being a "farang" (foreigner) you often pay a much higher price than the locals - on top of the list is the sie khiet waterfall near sichon where foreigners pay 5 times (...) the local price. and so on - BUT

BOTTOM LINE: overall still one of the very best places we know in thailand, whether it be for holiday or to live here - this is why we have settled down here and try to preserve this paradise as long as possible. khanom? simply highly recommendable. WELCOME.
